In a program called Defy Ventures I came up with my “raison d’etre”, my justification for existence, otherwise known as a purpose statement. Here it is:
As an independent and perseverant person I create healthier communities by educating leadership to recognize, embrace, and empower those who have chosen to positively change despite any and all forms of incarceration.
I am doubling crown on that commitment. This statement is what HumanMe is all about, its my raison d’etre and I will spend the rest of my life showing the world that those of us who have made a conscious decision to be better people during our incarceration have value that is thoroughly invaluable. We have drive and know what it means to face social rejection because our morals go against the grain.
Prison culture rewards the immoral and hails them as leaders and we go against that no matter the consequences. Some of us have been seriously hurt over this, this is a purpose I have fought for and now I’m doubling down my efforts to uphold it.
Lately I’ve been in a funk, I admit, my writing reflects my inner turmoil but I have not lost my way or given up my stability in the process. I am stronger than ever, more stable than I ever have been, and more ready now to uphold my values than I ever have been.
Join me, make a commitment to be supportive of those who have reformed themselves while incarcerated, who didn’t wait until they got out saying “I have to survive in here, when I get out I’ll…” Demand better from us and recognize those of us who are already delivering it to you.
To contact me you must be a humanist…
“A real humanist can be identified more by his trust in the people, which engages him in their struggle, then by a thousand actions in their favor without that trust.” (“Pedagogy of the Oppressed” by Paulo Freire )
