Life After Prison      by     Ruth Utnage

This last weekend I was walking with my brother James, something I don’t do nearly often enough, and we were daydreaming about what life is going to look like for our family once were all out of here. It felt good to picture everyone I love in one space.

We talked about what a sight we would be, all of us basically fresh out of prison, accustomed to certain elements that are abnormal. Like using metal utensils, or seeing a butter knife at all, and how the waitstaff at some Denny’s is going to wonder why we all sat down and immediately shoved their silverware down our drawers. “Where’d our butter knives go?!”

I can’t wait to see everyone I love again. Meet new people that I intend to love just as much. I have so many people in my life that are important to me and I want to embrace them without fear. Can’t wait.
